Science humour

This glossary is making the rounds right now, but is amusing. It also goes to show that the terminology I've seen in some science writing that makes me cringe has been around for while. (This was published in 1957.)

Subprime primer

A dialogue demonstrating how stupid the people who perpetuated the subprime crisis were, and probably still are.

"Gee, I'd like to buy a house but I haven't saved any money for a down-payment and I don't think I can afford the monthly payments. Can you help me?"

"Sure! Since the value of your house will always go up, we don't need down-payments any more!"

How’s that US election thing going? Onion-y.

The Onion has given me lots of entertainment over the years. This article is among their very best.

In volatile markets, your investment plan needs a solid foundation

The title above is the same as the subject line in an email I just got from Alumni Western. My spam filter tagged it as spam. I can't blame it.

Message from Alumni Western

I don't think I'm going to say it's "Not Junk".

Miscellany

  • "You can't stub your toe on the law of logic." This may be one of the dumbest arguments I've ever read — and I've been involved in student appeals.
  • "You hit on me, and therefore have to impress ME and pass MY criteria and standards..." Try not to laugh too hard. Read some of the comments.

Amusing word play

Via GrrlScientist, the results of the Washington Post's Mensa Invitation. Basically, take a word, alter one letter (add, delete, substitute) and come up with a definition for that word.

I think my favourites are "ignoranus" (a person who is both stupid and an asshole) and "Dopeler Effect" (the tendency for stupid ideas to seem smarter when presented rapidly).

A breakfast challenge for muff lovers

Burger King doing sexual innuendo with morning food long before McDonald's and the "I'd hit it" idiocy.

Update: If you listen closely, the references to "muff" in the ad sound like they have been edited. It likely said "muffin" in the original.

“Suck it, Jesus!”

Thanks to PZ Myers, I find out that Kathy Griffin is going to keep the censors employed for the Emmy broadcast.

"Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast on Saturday night," the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said in a statement Monday.

In her speech, Griffin said that "a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus."

She went on to hold up her Emmy, make an off-color remark about Christ and proclaim, "This award is my god now!"

According to her website, the off-colour remark was, "Can you believe this shit? Hell has frozen over. Suck it, Jesus, this award is my god now."

Now that's funny.
